4 Common Complaints About Dentures

Anyone who wears dentures knows that they face certain problems associated with it. It can be hard to go through this and it can be a nuisance trying to adjust to it on a daily basis. Let’s face it, it isn’t natural and apart from facing a whole load of problems, it also comes with some insecurities and it can cause a person to get upset or feel down.

There are other options which may not be natural either, but they do actually look and feel absolutely natural, such as dental implants. However, let’s take a look at some of the more common complaints from denture wearers.

1. Difficulty in Biting & Eating

With natural teeth, you will have a certain bite force but with dentures, you will only have a fraction of it. It is also not a good idea to push it as it may fall right off. In the past, you may never have thought about meals but now, even your meals require some thought which can put some people right off. A reduced ability to bite and chew normally results in larger pieces being swallowed. This in turn can cause digestive issues like indigestion or constipation, not to mention choking on food. Your ability to eat properly or even enjoy your food is diminished, which can leave a person feeling upset and even angry.

2. Reduction In Taste

Food is one of the joys of life. It is so enjoyable and even sensual. There isn’t a person who does not enjoy food, especially if it is something that is a favourite of theirs. However, with dentures, the sense of taste is diminished. This is because upper dentures in particular can cover your palate, so a lot of the flavour cannot be enjoyed. Even the palate contains taste buds, so you can see why many people complain about it.

3. Pain & Irritation

Dentures can irritate your gums and it can also cause pain and sore spots where it moves around. Imagine this spot having something rubbing on it time and time again. It can cause blisters and if you keep wearing it, how will it ever heal? Not only is it painful, it will be even harder to eat and enjoy your food. Gums are sensitive and there are a lot of nerve endings. It is not meant to withstand that kind of force.

4. Not Staying Put

Some people have suffered the humiliation and embarrassment of having their dentures fall out at the most awful moment, right in front of others. This can happen as a result of any number of reasons, such as talking, eating and even sneezing. Sneezing is such a powerful force, so imagine if all the forces of bad luck came together at one particular moment for you as you sneezed, only to see something flying out and hitting someone in the eye, blinding them!

Some people have active lives and may always have to be in the spotlight. It can be difficult for someone with dentures facing a crowd and have it fall out as they are giving a speech in front of a hundred people. It can cause a person to develop a social phobia and shy away from gatherings and meeting new people. A permanent and natural solution to dentures would be implants. If you have been considering this, speak to your doctor or dentist and find out how dental implants can change your life profoundly.
